Have you ever watched a kid get completely engrossed in something that seems weird and unconventional, but also strangely fascinating? It makes you wonder what kind of person they'll grow up to be, doesn't it?
As they say, kids are at their most creative and carefree when they're young and looking back, I really believe that's true. There's something about the things that captivated us as children that speaks to who we are as adults.
For me, one of those things was typography. When I was just seven years old, I would spend hours poring over old
Letraset Books, studying the different styles of serif, san serif, and script fonts. It sounds crazy, but I was totally mesmerised by the way each font could evoke a different mood or feeling. That’s me, the weird kid…nerdy then, cool now!
Now that I'm a designer, I look back on those early days with a sense of connection and pride. It's amazing to realise that my passion for design was with me all along, even as a kid. As I got older, that passion only grew stronger. I started painting murals on the walls of my parents house, to spending countless hours drawing pencil illustrations late into the night, to even beginning an apprenticeship in traditional hand-painted sign writing.
After all these years, it’s heart warming to know I have been true to myself. Even more exciting to know that I will be forever growing from the child-me, with so much more to explore.
