Flim-Flam Drummer aims to help drummers master their playing and performance more quickly and easily.
Mission
- Conduct user research to learn a drummer's wants, needs, pain points, and wish list
- Find gaps in the market of drum products and assisted tools
- Create MVP prototype to pitch to investors, with the potential to expand in the future
Journey
- Conducted 1-1 interviews and surveys with 55 drummers to understand their wants, needs, pain points, and wish lists
- Synthesised research into 3 common personas based on user groups (Beginner, Advanced and Tutor)
- Competitor audit to identify what was done well and what wasn't with existing products, and whether an existing product exists as an effective tool that drummers can use
- Created "How Might We" statements for ideation, exploring potential solutions with Lo-Fidelity wireframes and User Journeys, such as:
- How Might We provide feedback on my playing, so we know what I need to improve on?
- How Might We know how to practice the drums so I can be disciplined with my routine?
- How Might We guide a drummer so that they master the drums constructively?
- Conducted useability testing to validate concepts and direction
- Defined the technical requirements for the app to measure each drum stroke and provide gamified feedback
- Created fully functional MVP prototype
Research Findings
- Limited opportunity to practice the drums due to time, and curfews for the neighbours caused by excessive loudness
- Cost of drum lessons and the time to travel
- An issue commonly experienced by drummers is inconsistent playing technique between their left and right hands, resulting in an uneven performance.
In conjunction with the gap product findings of the Competitor Audit, we concluded that there was an opportunity to create a valuable tool that would challenge drummers and help them perfect their playing skills.
Challenges
- Finding a gap in the market and creating a valuable, unique tool for drummers
- Determining technical requirements to measure drum strokes and provide gamified feedback accurately.
Results
- Identified a gap in the market as a valuable tool to help drummers perfect their playing skills
- Created a fully functional MVP prototype for the 'Advanced' persona, with the potential to expand
- MVP provided accurate, quantifiable feedback for drummers to improve their playing
- User testing validated that the prototype met the users needs
- Provided valuable technical requirements that measured each drum stroke, providing accurate gamified feedback to know where their playing requires work
